for this month we are proud to feature Dove Elementary School as our Campus in the Spotlight!
Dove has been quite busy over the past few months.
First, in June 2016 Dove Elementary became an approved candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), pursuing authorization as an IB World School. The process to becoming a candidate school started in the Spring of 2015. 24 teachers attended training during the summer of 2015 and throughout the 2015-2016 school year they focused on implementing IB attributes and attitudes in each grade level. The IB attributes and attitudes are applied to every discipline and aim to “develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”
Dove will be considered an IB Candidate School for the next 2-3 years. Once they have met all criteria and demonstrated understanding of the PYP they can request to be an authorized IB World School.
Also, the Dove Elementary PTA created an outside learning space for all grades to use. A courtyard in the center of the school had been used in the past for outdoor learning, but over the years had become overgrown and unusable. Tracy Lemerand, the Environmental Chair at the time and currently the PTA President, created a set of plans for the courtyard and had them approved by the district. The plans included clearing out bushes and other overgrown obstacles and building benches and hanging a chalkboard as well as purchasing a greenhouse for growing plants. With the help of many volunteers from the PTA, Dad’s Club, and local Scout troops the finished courtyard was ready and is now a space that teachers and students alike look forward to using whenever they can! Awesome job, Tracy and Dove PTA!!
